OpérateursThe running tourist picks a city because of the race on its calendar — most often a marathon, half marathon or destination trail race. They travel with a partner, family or a club crew, and their multi-night stay is anchored by the start line but shaped by hotels, restaurants and neighborhoods within a short jog of it.
02 · Ce qu'ils recherchent
Hôtels03 · Activités
OpérateursPick up race bib and gear at the official expo (3–4 hour ritual)
Guided shakeout run along part of the course
Carb-loading dinners at pasta-forward local restaurants
Course recce by walking or driving key segments (mile 20, bridges, hills)
Recovery brunch and a beer/wine tasting the day after the race
Extra 2–3 days of city sightseeing with the supporter/family crew
Buying finisher merch and city-specific gear as trip souvenirs
Sharing GPX files, reels and finisher photos as social capital back home
04 · Destinations
DestinationsUS$427–700M annual impact; parent org NYRR generated US$934M across 34 races in FY25. Lottery pushes demand to operators with guaranteed bibs.
US$683M in 2024 (+22% YoY). Visitors spend ~US$322 lodging / US$111 food / US$147 shopping per day; 33% international runners.
US$509.1M impact in 2024 with US$330.5M in associated labor income — the archetype of a city-defining race weekend.
€469.4M impact in 2024 with 74,000+ participants; flat, fast course drives repeat international demand.
£250M+ impact in 2025 with a record 56,640 finishers and £73.5M raised for charity — the charity-bib pipeline is a defining channel.
¥78.7B national effect in 2025, ¥56.2B concentrated in the capital; anchors long-haul Asia-Pacific packages.
Newest Major (2025). ~US$73M added in 3 years and US$300M projected over 10; 25,000 runners in its first Major edition.
First African Major (2027 edition). R600–800M projected impact, 8,500 international participants, 200 small businesses and 2,500 weekend jobs.
Non-Major but US$500M+ impact in 2025 with 43,000 runners; keeps hotel occupancy off the 60% low-season floor.
US$60M estimated impact with hotel occupancy up to 80% on core days — a template for trail-race destinations.
05 · Économie
HôtelsRace weekends are dominated by HORECA spend: at Chicago, an average international visitor spends about US$322/night on lodging, US$111 on food and US$147 on retail. 59% of marathon participants stay 3–5 nights; at Montevideo 2026, 41% stayed 4+ nights and 38% stayed 2–3. International runners drive disproportionate revenue because they stay longer and spend more per day than the local finisher.
Booking is anchored to the lottery/entry calendar: 8–12 months out for Majors (post-lottery), 4–6 months for regional marathons, 2–4 months for half marathons and destination trail races.
06 · Concurrence et opportunité
HôtelsThe Majors and top charity-bib inventory are tightly held by official race travel partners with multi-year contracts; independent hotels and destinations compete on the surrounding weekend — pre-race dinners, expo shuttles, recovery services and the 2–4 extra nights that a supporter crew adds. Regional and trail races (Patagonia Run, Barranquilla, Río, Bogotá Half) remain largely open ground where a single well-positioned hotel or DMO can define the visitor experience.
